How Long Do You Have to Wait for a Dental Implant After Tooth Extraction?
What to Expect If You’re Considering Extraction and Implants
If you’ve been told you need a tooth pulled, your mind has probably already jumped ahead: What happens next? Will I have a gap in my smile? So, How Long Do You Actually Have to Wait?
The honest answer: it depends on your situation, but most patients fall into one of two categories.
Immediate Implant Placement
Some patients are candidates for same-day implant placement, meaning the implant post is placed into the socket at the same appointment as the extraction. This isn’t possible for everyone, but when it is, it offers real advantages: it preserves bone, reduces the total number of procedures, and shortens your overall treatment timeline. Your gum and bone health, the reason for the extraction, and whether any infection is present all factor into whether this is an option for you.
Delayed Implant Placement: The More Common Path
For most patients, there’s a waiting period between extraction and implant placement, typically anywhere from a few weeks to several months. If gum disease or infection was involved, bone grafting is needed, or your body simply needs time to heal, your periodontist will recommend waiting until conditions are right. Rushing the process can compromise how well the implant integrates with your jaw, so the wait, while frustrating, is worth it.
A typical timeline for delayed placement looks something like this:
- Extraction and initial healing: six to eight weeks for soft tissue to close
- Bone grafting (if needed): adds three to six months of healing time
- Implant placement: once the bone is ready, the titanium post is placed
- Osseointegration (implant fusing with bone): three to six months
- Final crown placement: once the implant is stable, your custom crown is attached
From start to finish, the process can take anywhere from a few months to close to a year for patients who need grafting. That timeline is longer than people often expect, which is exactly why it helps to start the conversation early, ideally before or at the same time as your extraction.
Is a Single Dental Implant Worth It?
This is the question a lot of patients are quietly asking, but don’t always voice directly. If it’s just one tooth, is going through all of this really necessary?

Unlike a dental bridge, an implant doesn’t require shaving down the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Unlike a partial denture, it doesn’t shift or need adhesive. A single implant, properly placed and restored, can last decades with routine care. For most patients, the investment in time and cost is well worth it when weighed against the long-term consequences of leaving a gap.
What If I’ve Already Had the Tooth Pulled?
Good news: it’s not too late. Patients come to us months or even years after a tooth extraction and are often still candidates for dental implants. If significant bone loss has occurred in that time, bone grafting can restore the volume needed to support an implant. The sooner you act, the more straightforward the process tends to be, but waiting doesn’t necessarily mean implants are off the table.
