Gum Recession Treatment

Minimally Invasive Techniques to Treat Receding Gums

Healthy gums protect your teeth from bacteria and other damaging substances. Gum recession occurs when the gums retreat from their proper position around your teeth and leave your tooth roots exposed. Not only do exposed roots make your teeth look longer than normal, causing you to look old, they leave your teeth unprotected. Thus, gum recession can be both a cosmetic and an oral health problem.

What Causes Gum Recession?

Below are the most common causes of gum recession:

  • Severe gum disease
  • Overly aggressive brushing or flossing
  • Inadequate earlier dental hygiene
  • Use of tobacco products
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Injury or trauma to the teeth
  • Misaligned or crooked teeth
  • Past orthodontic treatment
  • Genetics (predisposing you to gum disease, or causing you to have naturally thin gums)

The importance of treating receding gums

Exposed tooth roots are much more sensitive to heat, cold and sweets. The tooth roots themselves are softer than tooth enamel and are thus more prone to damage from bacteria, food acids and aggressive brushing.

Teeth with exposed roots can eventually become so worn down that they loosen, fracture or break. Thus, gum recession treatment is vital to the long-term preservation of your oral health.

Our Minimally Invasive Gum Recession Treatment

Drs. Ryan, Tyler, and Thomas Rubino use advanced, minimally invasive gum recession procedures which cause little to no post-operative discomfort and allow for a fast recovery.

The breakthrough Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique for receding gums

Gum Recession TreatmentThe most recent innovation in correcting receding gums is the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, a minimally invasive gum recession treatment that does not require any gum grafting and can effectively correct gum recession over your entire mouth in just one visit. Drs. Ryan, Tyler, and Thomas Rubino are three of only 1500 practitioners worldwide (to date) who are trained to deliver the pinhole procedure.

With the pinhole technique, no incisions are made and no sutures are needed. Instead, a small dental instrument is used to reposition the gums over the tooth roots through a tiny pinhole. Post-operative discomfort is minimal and healing time is very fast. Patients are usually able to resume their daily activities by the very next day.

Gentle, minimally invasive gum grafting treatment

Although the pinhole technique offers a good solution for many, there are still situations for which traditional gum grafting is needed. Special micro surgical instruments and techniques can also be used to provide gentle, minimally invasive gum grafting treatment that restores root coverage and thickens gums when necessary.

Gum Recession TreatmentHigh-magnification eyeglasses known as surgical loupes allow the doctors to clearly see very tiny areas of the mouth as they work. This enables them to use micro instruments which are more precise and gentler on the tissues than traditional, standard-sized instruments. It also enables your doctor to use micro sutures, which are very small, specialized sutures that dissolve on their own and do not require a second appointment for removal.

Our minimally invasive techniques allow us to work with great precision. This makes post-operative discomfort minimal and healing time much faster.

Your comfort is important to us

Your comfort during treatment is a top priority for our doctors and the staff. Before your treatment starts, we will take the time to thoroughly educate you about the procedures so you know what to expect and can feel at ease with your treatment.

Our injections are very gentle and we take the time to administer them with great care and make them comfortable for you. For added comfort in the chair we provide pillows, blankets and wireless headphones so that you can listen to music during treatment if you wish.

“Dr. Rubino is personable and has vast periodontal knowledge and many years of experience. It is very evident that Dr. Rubino has a passion for his specialty and great expertise, which gave me confidence in his recommendation for the ‘pinhole’ procedure. The pinhole procedure was much less invasive than gum grafting and the healing time was minimal.

“Dr. Rubino and his compassionate staff provided a warm and friendly atmosphere, making the process seem effortless. The procedure was brief, with no discomfort during or even afterward. I had been expecting some pain after the procedure but I was pleasantly surprised that I did not feel any pain whatsoever.
