Dr. Rubino can correct any flaws in your gum line and give you a beautiful, even-looking smile.

Cosmetic gum surgery is a gum recontouring and reshaping procedure to improve the the look of a gummy smile. A gummy smile occurs when too much gum tissue covers the root of the teeth, making them appear short, and fat.

Cosmetic Treatment to Enhance the Beauty of Your Smile

When too much gum tissue covers the crowns of your teeth, it can make your teeth look short and square and give you what is called a “gummy smile.” There are other instances where excess gum tissue growth makes the gums look too thick, or where gum tissue is unevenly distributed around the teeth. Also, gum tissue in the area of a missing tooth can sink, causing an unsightly depression that is sometimes visible even when the missing tooth has been replaced by a dental bridge.

These situations not only affect the aesthetics of your smile by creating that gummy smile, but in some cases they make it more difficult to properly clean your teeth to prevent gum disease or decay. As periodontists, Drs. Ryan, Tyler, and Thomas Rubino experts in enhancing the beauty of your smile and preserving the health of your gums and teeth.

Fixing a Gummy Smile

Before and after gummy smile correction.

To correct a “gummy smile,” the excess gum and bone tissue covering the teeth are removed during a gentle procedure. This treatment is not reversible, so a moderate approach is taken.

A conservative amount of tissue will initially be removed and then checked with you to see if it is adequate or if you would like some further correction. If you wish a bit more tissue removal, an additional small amount will be removed until your exact desires are reached.

Your doctor will make sure that your gum line is natural-looking and attractive, and that you are satisfied with the results.

Aesthetically Recontouring the Gum Line Around Your Teeth

Your teeth can be perfectly healthy, straight and white, but an uneven gum line around your teeth can still impair the beauty of your smile by making it look odd-shaped or asymmetrical. Drs. Ryan, Tyler, and Thomas Rubino can correct this by gently recontouring the gum line around your teeth so they will appear completely even and symmetrical across your smile.

Aesthetic Correction of Overgrown Gum Tissue

Sometimes there can be areas of the mouth where the gums have grown excessively thick, causing the gum tissue to look bulky or irregularly shaped, another type of gummy smile. Your doctor can gently remove the excess gum tissue and bring it down to its proper thickness and shape.

Rebuilding a Sunken Jaw Line Under a Missing Tooth

When a tooth is lost, bone loss and gum shrinkage occur in the space where the tooth used to be. This causes the gum line, just in that area, to sink and form an unsightly “valley.” If the missing tooth were replaced by a bridge, this could create a gap under the bridge. Your doctor can graft gum tissue under the dental bridge and build your gum line back to its normal height and thickness, making the bridge much more cosmetic in appearance.

Correcting Receded Gums and Restoring Root Coverage

When your gums recede, your tooth roots become exposed. This can make you look older than you are, and it subjects the tooth roots to damage and decay as they are inadequately protected. Drs. Ryan, Tyler, and Thomas Rubino provides minimally invasive gum recession treatments, including the breakthrough Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, to cover exposed and unattractive tooth roots with new gum tissue.
