Healthy gums protect your teeth from bacteria and other damaging substances. Gum recession occurs when the gums retreat from their proper position around your teeth and leave your tooth roots exposed. Not only do exposed roots make your teeth look longer than normal, causing you to look old, but they also leave your teeth unprotected. Thus, gum recession can be both a cosmetic and an oral health problem.

What Causes Gum Recession?
Below are the most common causes of gum recession:
- Severe gum disease
- Overly aggressive brushing or flossing
- Inadequate earlier dental hygiene
- Use of tobacco products
- Teeth grinding or clenching
- Injury or trauma to the teeth
- Misaligned or crooked teeth
- Past orthodontic treatment
- Genetics (predisposing you to gum disease, or causing you to have naturally thin gums)
The Importance of Treating Receding Gums
Exposed tooth roots are much more sensitive to heat, cold and sweets. The tooth roots themselves are softer than tooth enamel and are thus more prone to damage from bacteria, food acids and aggressive brushing.
Teeth with exposed roots can eventually become so worn down that they loosen, fracture or break. Thus, gum recession treatment is vital to the long-term preservation of your oral health.
Benefits of Treating Gum Recession
- Protection Against Tooth Decay: Restored gum coverage shields vulnerable root surfaces from decay and bacterial infection.
- Reduced Sensitivity: Treatment significantly decreases tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet stimuli.
- Enhanced Aesthetics: Correcting receding gums restores a natural, youthful smile line and improves overall appearance.
- Prevention of Further Damage: Early treatment stops progressive gum recession and prevents additional bone loss.
- Improved Oral Health: Healthy gum tissue provides better support for teeth and maintains proper oral bacterial balance.
- Increased Confidence: A restored gumline can significantly boost self-confidence in your smile and appearance.
- Long-term Tooth Preservation: Treating recession helps prevent future tooth loss and maintains oral function.
Gum Recession Treatment
Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique
The most recent innovation in correcting receding gums is the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, a minimally invasive gum recession treatment that does not require any gum grafting and can effectively correct gum recession over your entire mouth in just one visit. Drs. Ryan, Tyler, and Thomas Rubino are three of only 1500 practitioners worldwide (to date) who are trained to deliver the pinhole procedure.
With the pinhole technique, no incisions are made and no sutures are needed. Instead, a small dental instrument is used to reposition the gums over the tooth roots through a tiny pinhole. Post-operative discomfort is minimal and healing time is very fast. Patients are usually able to resume their daily activities by the very next day.

Gum Grafting
Although the pinhole technique offers a good solution for many, there are still situations for which traditional gum grafting is needed. Special micro surgical instruments and techniques can also be used to provide gentle, minimally invasive gum grafting treatment that restores root coverage and thickens gums when necessary.
High-magnification eyeglasses known as surgical loupes allow the doctors to clearly see very tiny areas of the mouth as they work. This enables them to use micro instruments which are more precise and gentler on the tissues than traditional, standard-sized instruments. It also enables your doctor to use micro sutures, which are very small, specialized sutures that dissolve on their own and do not require a second appointment for removal.
Our minimally invasive techniques allow us to work with great precision. This makes post-operative discomfort minimal and healing time much faster.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does gum recession treatment take?
Treatment time varies by procedure. The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique can treat multiple teeth in a single visit, while traditional gum grafting may require separate sessions for different areas. Your specific treatment timeline will be discussed during consultation.
Is gum recession treatment painful?
Both the Pinhole Technique and traditional grafting are performed under local anesthesia. The Pinhole Technique typically results in minimal post-operative discomfort and faster healing compared to traditional grafting. Most patients return to normal activities the next day.
Can receding gums grow back on their own?
No, once gums have receded, they won’t naturally regenerate. Professional treatment is necessary to restore proper gum coverage and protect exposed root surfaces.
How can I prevent gum recession after treatment?
Maintain good oral hygiene, use proper brushing technique (avoid aggressive brushing), wear a night guard if you grind your teeth, and attend regular dental check-ups.
Which treatment option is best for me?
The best treatment depends on various factors, including the extent of recession, gum tissue thickness, and overall oral health. During your consultation, your doctor will thoroughly evaluate your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment approach.
