Aftercare Instructions
After tooth extraction, adhere to these aftercare recommendations for quick healing and preventing problems:
- Control Bleeding: Apply gauze to the extraction site for 30–45 minutes.
- Rest: Relax for at least 24 hours after the extraction. Limit activity for the next day or two.
- Manage Swelling: For 10 minutes at a time, apply an ice pack to the cheek immediately after the procedure.
- Pain Relief: Use painkillers as directed.
- Diet: Eat soft foods such as yogurt, pudding, or applesauce the day after the extraction.
- Oral Hygiene: After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with a solution made of half a teaspoon of salt and eight ounces of warm water.
- Avoid: Do not smoke, drink from a straw, or rinse forcefully for 24 hours after the extraction.
- Head Position: When lying down, prop your head up with pillows. Lying flat may prolong bleeding.
Potential Risks and Complications of Tooth Extraction
While tooth extractions are usually safe, being aware of possible risks is important:
- Bleeding: Post-operative bleeding is normal after tooth extraction.
- Infection: There is always a risk of infection.
- Dry Socket: The blood clot dislodges, exposing the bone.
- Nerve Injury: Damage to nerves can cause numbness.
- Damage to Adjacent Teeth: There is a risk of damage to adjacent teeth.
Our trained professionals at Rubino Periodontics & Implant Dentistry take precautions to reduce these risks. Call us immediately if any issues arise.
Preserving the Ridge for a Future Dental Implant
After a tooth is extracted, the empty socket will be filled with bone graft material to regenerate bone in the space left by the missing tooth. This procedure, known as a socket graft, preserves the height and thickness of the jaw ridge where the tooth is missing and simultaneously prepares the site for a future dental implant.
In many cases, a dental implant can be placed at the same time that a socket graft is performed. The regenerated bone will then fuse with the implant surfaces and the implant will be securely anchored.
